Rainbow Ballroom, it was scary back then

~
Come back with us now to those hot summer nights when half of Fresno's teens were driving up and down Belmont. Or remember what it was like on Fulton St. before Belmont took the title of "Fresno's Main Drag" Remember the Rainbow Ballroom? Post you night life memories here.

1968 poster of Janis Joplin at the Rainbow Ballroom. It was about this time that my neighbor was telling me that all the girls stood with their hand, palm down and covering their drink cup - to prevent a pill being dropped in. Known back then as a "mickey"

I lived in Fresno in the early 70s,and what I remember about the Rainbow ballroom was a good time.
All of the cool bands played there. Tower of Power , Bobby Womack. On one show there was the Dramatics, the Dells, the Delfonics and New Birth.
At that time it was more of a nightclub feel.

Redbone played the Rainbow along with Tower of Power multiple times in the early 70’s…some were sit on the floor concerts, that could morph into full blown dances. The place was not that scary, if you kept your nose clean….but, a fight at the Rainbow was not an unexpected event. And the streets around the place, became prime real estate for car thieves. Despite all that….loved the place.
